Karen Baker Thumm is an associate member of the prestigious American Academy of Equine Art. A native of Michigan, she has been drawing and painting horses since early childhood. Her formal art education includes studies in graphic design, illustration and the Fine Arts and has been supplemented by self study and attendance at art workshops. She has been a working professional artist since 1984. Karen's primary media are oils, pastel and pencil with occasional work in colored pencil and pen & ink. Her style is primarily based in classical realism with a nod to the Impressionists' use of clean rich color. Her lifelong interest in illustration is manifested in every work of art which creates a mood or tells a story. Karen is an internationally collected artist and well respected within the equine art community. After a successful career as a pet portrait artist, Karen is now concentrating on equestrian, wildlife and landscape art for exhibition and gallery venues. She is particularly interested in portraying sport horses and Michigan wildlife and landscapes. An award winning equestrian artist, her work has been accepted into several national juried exhibitions, including the American Academy of Equine Art Fall Showcase in 1999, 2003 and 2004. Her artwork has appeared in Equus, Equine Images, Equine Vision, Polo Players Edition, Art Business News and Paint Horse Journal. Book publications include cover art and illustrations for "The Michigan Riding and Hiking Trail" and contributing art for "Colors; The Horse Coloring Book" She is a member of The Equine Art Guild, Great Lakes Pastel Society and Art Center Traverse City. A long time horse owner, she regularly attends horse events in Michigan and beyond. Currently, she is studying the art of Dressage with her horse, Scottie, and enjoys trail riding in the northern Michigan woods.
